Statement on County Sick Leave Policy
NCC GOP Calls for Immediate Review of "Sick Leave" Giveaway
News reports and citizen investigations have recently revealed that New Castle County employees receive 12 "bankable" sick days per year resulting in over $2.3 million in payouts to retiring workers over the last three years. With employees collecting up to 100 paid sick days at retirement, all told, current county government obligations tally well above $20 million.
"This is another punch in the gut to county taxpayers," said Joe Oddo, NCC GOP Vice Chairman. "On the heels of a massive 25% tax increase, this policy is yet one more example of an arrogant, out-of-control government spending spree that has resulted from unchecked one-party rule over New Castle County. Sick days should be used when people are sick, not as a privileged perk of public service. Given the county's dire budget situation, it is simply unacceptable for our elected leaders to hide behind the claim that sick pay rules are a function of a union contract. County Executive Coons and Council President Clark should tell citizens exactly what their position is on this huge taxpayer obligation and answer the common sense call to address this issue immediately."
